Understanding Jaw Shapes: V-Line and Other Jaw Contours in Facial Aesthetics

Modifying the jawline through surgery to achieve a well-defined and angulated jawline is one of the main reasons for our patients to book a consultation

In addition, a clear delimitation between the jawline and the neck is generally considered attractive according to our current standards of beauty.

There are different formats at the mandibular level, although not all of them have the same acceptance among people. Generally, the obtuse mandibular angle pattern is the most desired. That is, a mandibular angle (that formed by the ascending ramus and the mandibular body) between 120º and 130º can be considered ideal, both in men and women.

Types of Facial Shapes

The jawline also helps to configure the overall facial shape, as it is an important representative in defining the face:

  • heart shape
  • diamond shape
  • square shape
  • triangle shape
  • oval shape
  • rectangle shape
  • round shape, among others…

Types of Jaw Shapes

This is why, depending on the shape of our face, there will be some jaw shapes that are more favorable than others. At the mandibular level we find:

  • Round shape, with little marked angles and a rounded chin, helping to achieve a U-shape, according to round or oval face shapes, typically feminine.
  • V-line or triangular shape, with a marked obtuse jaw angle and a “beaky” or narrow chin, very much in keeping with diamond or heart shape faces, as well as triangle.
  • Square shape, typically male, with closed jaw angle, powerful jaw body (100-110º) and square chin.

Obtaining harmonious and aesthetic results in Jaw Surgery

It should be noted that there are more “natural” shapes than others in human nature and that forcing a particular shape in some facial configurations or overdoing a particular shape can lead to inharmonious or even unaesthetic results, as well as entailing risks for key anatomical structures in the area.

For example, in Asian countries there is a very strong tendency in facial surgery to achieve V-shapes, in order to counteract the square faces so characteristic of the Asian phenotype.

While it is true that this surgery, performed by experienced professionals, can have an aesthetically pleasing result, it often leads to unnatural face shapes and overdone or fake looks. As we already know, in surgery or medicine, we should not get carried away by fads or try to achieve results that do not match our face. That is why the figure of an honest and experienced facial surgeon is invaluable when it comes to intervene in such a complex region as the mandibular.

JAWContour®, 3D Precision in Jaw Surgery

In order to modify the native format of a jaw, we have JAWContour®, which bases its action on two technical tools that will allow us to eliminate excess bone in those areas where it is necessary, such as the angles or chin; and to obtain a U-shaped or V-shaped format, as required by each patient.

It is a completely safe surgery, since it is performed under three-dimensional planning in a specific software, which allows us to print the cutting guides to be used during surgery. Increase the volume where needed, for example, in those cases in which we want to obtain a squarer or more marked jaw. This augmentation can be achieved through the use of computer-tailored implants, designing the desired format.
